Greg Steelhead Fishing on the Olympic Peninsula – January 31-February 1, 2019

Well, the steelhead gods made me work for this one! Mark Myers and I spent two days in the Olympic Peninsula chasing winter steelhead. The fishing was very slow overall, but I managed to land a small one on the first day and a monster on the second. And the large one was quite a treat–showed himself immediately with what Mark calls the “alligator move” and we knew this was a big fish (36.5″, we measured it). He ran 50+ yards of line twice, we took him through probably the biggest rapids on the river (not intentionally….) then…. I’m not entirely sure what happened, but I believe the guide was moving a pole to get to the net, and somehow my line got tangled with this other pole. Well, it got to the point where I could reel any more line because the bobber from rogue pole was stuck at the tip of mine. The WORST feeling, believe me. Fortunately the fish was pretty close at this point, but of course he swam under the boat. The guide grabbed the line with his right hand and lifted the fish and netted it with his left hand. OMG, it was crazy. Thanks Mark for inviting me out–it was a grind but worth it for this monster. Oh, and Charles Skorupa, steelhead do exist.  Scott Skorupa, I’ve got 2 dates booked for mid-Jan next year, hopefully you will join me.
