Judy’s Movies

I love the movies.  I watch far too many but don’t see enough.  As a mom of three, gone are the days of a lazy rain Saturday movie marathon or even head out on a premiere night with my husband.  Now, I have to pick and choose to go out to the movies, and frankly, I don’t have time to see bad movies.   So, here you’ll find Judy’s Movies my reviews of in-theater, DVD, streaming and cable movies.

My movie watching background: you won’t find any Scream, Saw 21 or kids-separate-from-group-only-to-get-bludgeoned movies here.  I saw one of the original Halloween movies during a sleepover when I was kid and I had my fill.   My love of movies comes from my parents, especially my Dad.   When I was a kid, we would watch tons of movies together, and he seemed to awe me (and still does) with names of actors and their bios.  And that’s what you’ll see here.  I often will connect actors with real-life connection only to end up with other movies (or tv shows).    For example, Felicity Huffman, Lynette on Desperate Housewives, is a favorite actress of mine and is married to William H. Macy.  Macy an incredible movie star played the lead role in a favorite movie of mine, that I will watch whenever it comes on, called The Cooler.  I prefer the suspenseful, thought-provoking movie over scary ones.

I grew up on Spaghetti Westerns and listening to my Dad credit the hundreds of people who made these movies.  So if there’s a Western on tv, chances are I may stop and watch, to see if I can catch Clint Eastwood, John Wayne or even Yul Brynner, that’s if you consider Westworld a western.

I love Sci-Fiction/Fantasy: I was 10 when my Dad took my brothers and I to see Star Wars in the movie theater (on Cape Cod) .  The line wrapped around three sides of the movie theater.  These movies were followed by Close Encounters, E.T. and the Alien and Back to the Future trilogies.  As for series goes: I love the Terminator, Men in Black, Lord of the Rings, and my ultimate series, Harry Potter movies.  In this category, I own all of these for mentioned movies and watch them repeatedly.  Most will ‘be on in the background’ while doing other activities but worth having on to watch.

I also favor Drama, Romantic Comedies and Musicals.  DVDs that we own: Camelot, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Moulan Rouge, LaBamba, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz, The Blues Brothers, The Ten Commandments, Shawshank Redemption, American President, Quiz Show, Something about Mary, Maid in Manhatten, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Catch Me If You Can, Love Actually and Something’s Gotta Give.

These movies I would rate: “Worth my time”.  Because, when it comes down to it, you either want to know if you should see a movie or not.  So, I will rate these movies either “Worth my time” or “Waste of my time”.  The other part of seeing movies has to do with money.  Is it worth seeing in the theater or to rent it/stream it or wait until it comes on HBO.

I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of our home.  No kids kicking my seat, or some tall person sitting in front of me; we can make our own popcorn.  But there are definitely movies (usually action) that I want to watch on the big screen.  I never go to opening nights, except if it’s Harry Potter, but we’ll get to that later.

Ratings: Worth my time or Waste of my time
Viewing: Theater, Rent it, Stream it or DVR it
